We are a competition BBQ team consisting of family and friends. We compete annually at the Memphis in May™ World Championship BBQ Cook-off (The Super bowl of BBQ) at Tom Lee Park on the banks of the Mississippi River during the third weekend in May. This is the largest BBQ competition on the planet with hundreds of teams, thousands of participants, and millions of guests and viewers. It is a whole week filled fun, food and camaraderie. We also compete in the Tennessee State Championship (Tennessee Funfest) over Father's Day weekend in Memphis.
The Porkspankers were conceived in August 2001 on the back porch at the Boyd Farm in Dover, TN. It was one of those rare occasions when most all the family and several friends were together. We decided we needed an enjoyable event to bring us all together routinely so we didn't let the years get behind us without seeing each other regularly. Besides, most of us love to cook, all of us love to eat, and we all know how to work. So we figured BBQ was for us. We immediately began working on the necessaries of putting a team together and preparing for our first appearance as a bona-fide BBQ team.
Our opening act was at Memphis in May™ 2002 as a Patio team. The effort, the work, the rain, the sheer magnitude of it all, was way more than we anticipated. We loved it! We all had a blast. We decided that this needed to continue until the next generation took over for us.
Our involvement and number of guests and friends has grown incredibly every year and we don't expect that to change. Some of the friendships we've built at the BBQ events have turned out to be more than just for one week a year in May. The friends we have made and the time we get to spend together has made all the hard work worth every minute.
